The student researching this topic should note that the writer/tutor assumes the student is familiar with the narrative, therefore, it is not recounted and also all passage citations refer to the Book of Genesis. Biblical scholar Andre Wenin offers an insightful analysis of the ways in which the various characters in the story of Joseph are developed within this narrative. Contrary to some scholarly opinion, Wenin does not critique Joseph unfavorably for relating his dreams to his brothers (37:5-11), rather h suggests that the focus of this text is "not on Josephs character, but on the meaning of the dreams.... Thus, one would not expect any implied criticism for Joseph passing on the dreams" (Vogels 749). Furthermore, Wenin does not interpret Josephs later treatment of his brothers as being motivated by the desire for revenge. He states, "Josephs actions were necessary for him to test whether his brothers had changed, and so bring about an enduring reconciliation within the family" (Vogels 749). Genesis chapter 38 departs from the story of Joseph in order to relate what happens to Judah, one of Josephs brothers. While past scholarship has considered chapter 38, i.e., the story of Judah and Tamar, to be an anomaly and out-of-place at this point in Genesis, Richard Clifford argues in his analysis that Judahs story fits within the context of relating the history of Jacobs sons, as it demonstrates how one son, despite "his serious sins," continues to retain Gods favor and, therefore, "establishes a major tribe in Israel" (Clifford 519).
