muscle size and muscle fiber combination (fast or slow twitch), anaerobic threshold, lung capacity, flexibility and...endurance" (Quinn). Advances in genetic research are beginning to reveal evidence of other ways in
which heredity plays a role in the performance of top elite athletes. For example, a new genetic test, while expensive, is being eagerly sought by parents who dream of
a bright future in athletics for their children. This new test, for $149, can tell parents if their offspring possess variants of the gene ACTN3, which is associated with the
presence of a particular muscle protein (alpha-actinin-3) (Lite). This protein helps muscles contract more forcefully at high speeds and it is been identified as being aiding the performance of elite-level
athletics (Lite). For example, sports researchers have found a combination of ACTN3 variants in the metabolism of Olympic sprinters (Lite). Kevin Reilly, the president of the company marketing the
test, indicates that parents should not regard the test results as the "final word" that their child will or will not excel in sports, but rather he stresses the usefulness
of the test in making an educated guess as to a childs athletic future when a child is below age 9 (Lite). In other words, the test should be understood
as an early indicator of genetic talent. The test is simple. A swab is taken from the inside of the childs mouth, which is subsequently analyzed to determine the childs
