Because of the significant social, economic and political changes which took place in the last century, and the different impact which these had on successive generations, one can
categorise Americans as belonging to one of several distinct groups: the GI generation, the Silent generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y and Generation 9/11.
Each of these groups has been affected by the
international and national events which took place during their formative years: those of the GI generation, for example, were affected by the Great Depression; the Baby Boomers, who lived through
Vietnam, developed a different attitude towards authority and government from the GI generation as a result. The events which took place in the formative years of individuals do not only
impact on their early development, but also engender characteristics which remain throughout adult life, and therefore affect their social and cultural attitudes.
Clearly, this is an important element to take into account when considering how the members of
the different generations interact with one another, and how this in turn may affect the organisational structure of the workplace and in society as a whole. Looking at generational characteristics
can give considerable insight into the motivations of individuals, their political viewpoints, their attitude towards personal economics, their self-image in relation to authority and so on.
