by P. Giltman 7/2010 Please On May 12, 1962, General Douglas MacArthur traveled to
West Point to receive the Silvanus Thayer Award. In his farewell address to the Corps of cadets at West Point, he touched on many different topics. First he expressed how
emotional he was to be receiving an award of this magnitude. He also speaks of duty, honor and country and how he can only fall short in trying to express
all that they stand for. Yet he encourages all of the cadets to show courage and to fight for what they know is right. He asks that they use these
three words as a backbone in all that they do. "They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nations defense," he says. He continues on about
what these three timeless words mean and the different strengths they will give to anyone who practices these terms and applies them on a daily basis. Basically, these terms will
teach those who practice them to live by a code in which they will eventually become an officer and a gentleman. MacArthur continues as he defines the American soldier.
He defines him as the worlds noblest figures. "His name and fame are the birthright of every American citizen," he says. MacArthur admits that when he thinks of soldiers and
