the issue of ethics has come to the fore. General Electric (GE) is often seen as a firm that has a good reputation, with many positive practices and a strong
ethics framework. It is notable that COSO; the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission which was formed in 1985 in order to provide sponsorship for the National Commission
on Fraudulent Financial Reporting note that the problems that result in fraudulent reporting are likely to reflect the general risk management practices and cultures that exist within the organization.
In line with this concept of culture and organization wide practices impacting on the way reporting ultimately takes place, and to ensure ethical practices GE have implemented a system that
is aimed at supporting the ethical practices and the integrity of the standards and practices that take place. This is seen with the integrity policy, which every member of
staff has to agree to sign and is supported by the ombudsman program. The ombudsman program1 provides the body to which any
employee, or other stakeholders with connections to the company, is able to read the report any concerns regarding actual or suspected breaches of legal or ethical standards. The process facilitates
a reporting of incidences on an anonymous basis. The utilization of this process is also supported by the declarations by the company that employees who fail to report, A. no,
or even a suspect concern regarding the breach will face disciplinary action. However, any individual that does make a report is protected, and if any retaliation undertaken place those who
