many of the values and attitudes which are found in the current day. General Electric has its foundation the work of Thomas Edison. In 1876 Thomas Edison opened a laboratory
in New Jersey at Menlo Park, this was established in order to undertake research into electrical devices and their potential following working he had seen in Philadelphia at the Centennial
Exposition (GE, 2011). It was from this laboratory that the incandescent electric lamp was created (GE, 2011). In order to bring what is different is interest together Edison created the
Edison General Electric Co. in 1890; however he was also facing competition. A competitor company; The Thomas Houston Company was founded at the same time, and managed to grow to
dominance as a result of a number of different mergers under the guidance of Charles A Coffin (GE, 2011). Both Edisons and Coffins companies expanded, but it soon became
apparent that it would be difficult for either company to the alone, relying only on a patents and technologies. In order to repeat effectively the two companies merged in 1892,
with the post merger company being called the General Electric Company (GE, 2011). The company was strength to strength, based on innovation development of commercially viable products. In 1895 the
