of gender within the novel. The following paper examines the feminine and masculine constructs within "Don Quixote." Masculine and Feminine One critic indicates that "Each of Don Quixotes
encounters with women characters in Don Quixote I represents a different aspect of the heros attitude towards the world" (Womens Honor, Mans Greatest Invention). And, one of the most important
aspects of this involves the existence of womens honor, a reality that Don Quixote was clearly immersed within. We note this in the following: "In 17th century Spanish literature, women
are the vessels of mens honor. The extent of mens dependence on womens actions and initiative throughout Don Quixote is truly remarkable. There is a profound irony in this, in
that male honor by definition derives from the fame from doing glorious deeds, while honor for women consists purely of reputation, and less of a reputation, the better" (Womens Honor,
Mans Greatest Invention). We note that there is a very powerful distinction, as well as intimate relationship, between men and women. For example, we note that "In the village
society that Don Quixote escapes, and in books of chivalry, women are honorable for what they refrain from doing. The use of force (the problem of rape) is central to
