that addresses how lost many people, men, have become in a society that is filled with consumerism and a society that leaves an individual with no true identity aside from
what they own. It is also a film that can be seen from many other directions, not the least of which is a direction aimed at gender in the country.
It is a film that depicts men engaged in a fight club that somehow brings them back to their most basic being, that possessing the most primal of needs and
desires. Throughout the film we see only one woman, Marla. Her character stands as a very subtle and sharp contrast to the men and the character she represents offers up
a very negative impression of women. The following paper examines the character of Marla and argues that her character depicts women as needy and manipulative. Fight Club and
Marla When we see Marla in the beginning of the film she is a mystery and seems incredibly dark and even cruel perhaps. She shuns Edward Nortons character, appearing to
be a strong and independent woman. However, her character slowly develops into a needy woman who is quite dysfunctional, on drugs, and desperate for love and attention. We see
this when Edward Nortons character slowly develops the alter ego played by Brad Pitt. Edward Nortons character wants nothing to do with Marla, and sees her as his cancer in
many ways. Yet his alter ego takes Marla to bed and engages in a very intimate and energy filled relationship with her. But, at the same time this alter ego
is telling Nortons character that she is really nothing of value. She is of no concern, is dirty, and is not to be trusted in any way. This offers us
