simply because they express the human side of war. War created a social model where men would go off to fight, and the women were kept waiting for them. The widows walk is seen in American homes as the ships would come into view to see women pacing on these small porches as they awaited the arrival of their mates. During the end of the Second World War, the women eagerly waited the arrival of the men. In fact, one infamous picture taken in the streets of New York was of a couple kissing. After war, there would be sex. Of course, during the war, the men would find women overseas and this is something seen in the context of Remarques work. In fact, in one part of the book All Quiet on the Western Front, one character called Haie asks whether or no there would be women, and then licks his lips (Remarque 78). In another part of the book, there is much innuendo as no explicit talk of sex is made. One example is that one of the characters is thinking about a girls legs but then his thoughts drift higher than that (Remarque 127). This of course implies that he is fantasizing about sex. All Quiet on the Western Front is an older but expressive work that captures the problem of war through the eyes of its characters. For example, one part conveys feelings associated with the suspense and fear consistent with wartime violence: "At last it grows quiet. The fire has lifted over us and is now dropping on the reserves. We risk a look. Red rockets shoot up to the sky. Apparently theres an attack coming. Where we are it is still quiet. I sit up and shake the recruit by the shoulder. "All over, ...
