There are a number of ways in which the concept of gender differentiation in educational systems can be considered, with regard to discrepancies in educational attainment and
the various factors which may have an influence on such discrepancies. For example, Hyland (2002) makes the point that research demonstrates that overall, boys tend to exhibit poorer educational performance
than girls; however, she also notes that this is not something which is confined solely to Britain, but can be seen at an international level.
She asserts that the difference in attainment is not entirely a matter of biological difference, but owes more to the social environment,
in that the educational system as a whole is not serving students of either sex as well as it might. For instance, there has been a trend away from child-centred

grades, rather than increasing their knowledge base as a whole, and are forced to rely on external assessment rather than learning to analyse their own levels of performance.
