women who smoked. But, with womens rights and women being determined to have the same rights as men, women took up smoking as a sign of independence. Through the decades
we have seen the rates alter as men and women switch positions as the most prevalent smokers. In more recent times it seems that more men than women smoke, but
then again it appears to depend on the age group and the study being performed. As with any research topic there is bound to be some deviancy as subjects and
processes differ. Bearing this in mind we present the following paper which examines studies which address smoking tobacco and gender relevancy. Gender and Tobacco As mentioned, women did
not always smoke tobacco but eventually came to see it as a way to assert their independence. Of course, this was before smoking was widely understood to be an incredible
danger. As an interesting historical perspective we find that Marlboro was first intended to gain female smokers. But, the company knew that it would be a challenge to sell to
women. "Advertisers had to somehow convince the women that stained teeth, foul breath and addictive cravings, not to mention that dry, heaving morning cough, were somehow genteel and ladylike. Philip
