the founding of the nation. This paper considers the difference in power and accountability for men and women in the social welfare setting. Discussion The biggest difference between men and
women in this context probably has to do with the "roles" men and women play in relation to the family and to the labor force. Society has traditionally divided labor
into "mens work" and "womens work." "Mens work" is important and sometimes dangerous, and tends to be well-compensated. "Womens work," on the other hand, has always been devalued: a woman
is "just" a home maker, wife and mother, she doesnt have a "real" job. Society is very hard on both sexes, but one source suggests that we have to avoid
"trying to grind as much out of women" as we have out of men (Boris and Kleinberg, 2003, p. 90). Women are "seriously overburdened" in our society, since they are
expected to "manage a home, look after children, and still be up for a job the next morning" (Boris and Kleinberg, 2003, p. 90). In an ideal world, both marriage
partners would contribute equally to running the home and caring for children, and the work women do at home would be as important as that done in an office (Boris
and Kleinberg, 2003). "But after decades of new feminism, we still wait for men to do housework and for caretaking to be valued" (Boris and Kleinberg, 2003, p. 90). This
inequality carries over into the social welfare setting, where payments and support are given more readily to the person who appears to be more valuable: the man. He is, after
