to gender. There are male perspectives and female perspectives. Whitbeck (1986) explains that in Jungian psychology, "the feminine is conceived of as one pole of a masculine-feminine polarity" (p.40). In
essence, females have male tendencies and males have female tendencies. There is always the joke about the effeminate man who does not know that he is "gay." In other words,
a gay person seems to exhibit certain traits that others pick up on. Indeed, many associate masculinity with the male gender and femininity with the female sex. However, both sexes
have "male" and "female" hormones. Allen (1983) on the other hand talks a great deal about language and how that is related to sex identity. Allen (1983) also contends
that there will be times when sex identity should be overlooked or ignored. Identity, inclusive of but not limited to sexual identity or gender identity, is something that is somewhat
controversial. Who is anybody? What is identity exactly? Many consider their identity as something that is a personal thing. It is what makes them unique from other individuals. People carry
identity in the form of a driver license for example so that they can prove just who they are. In the realm of philosophy, identity is a concept that goes
rather deep. It relates not only to who a person is--his or her ethnicity, history, name and body type--but also to an inner entity that some view as the soul.
Others look at identity as something more than personhood as they notice that there is an observer. If the thinking mind can be observed, then something more is going on.
