2004, p.16a). While this is the case, one has to wonder just what is appropriate for girls and boys to view. After all, in the adult world, there are magazines
geared to men and those that are geared to women. It is expected that women would like Womans Day and that men would vie for auto and motorcycle publications, but
of course that is stereotyping. Does the same thing happen in the childrens genres? This does seem to be the case. There are magazines such as Boys Life and
American Girl that are obviously targeted to a specific gender. But some think that it is important that this not be done. Why? Studies have revealed that children acquire
cultural stereotypes rather quickly (Farrah & Seta, 2003). By creating magazines geared to either boys or girls, those stereotypes will become more prevalent. One teacher taught her class about
gender stereotyping and had them go to magazine advertisements that illustrated these gender variances (Check, 2002). The teacher was concerned in part due to the images of thin girls
which had been projected and believes that her attempt to teach the children to notice that magazines are embracing stereotypes was fruitful (2002). Pointing out the gender stereotypes is a
good idea but not all publishers are guilty of this practice. Some take the other tact. It is a balancing act. For example, there are fewer black actors in mainstream
programming so black shows emerge. Similarly, there may be fewer good role models for girls in mainstream childrens magazines so new magazines crop up to address the problem. Patron (2004)
