is it that there are more male CEOs and more male politicians in high places? A lot of the reason for this gender inequality stems from past history. For decades,
women were domestic creatures. In the United States for example, they were not the breadwinners and it was not until after the Second World War that women would come into
their own. Still, it is said, there is a glass ceiling for women. They cannot get as far as their male counterparts in todays world. Going back in time to
the world in which Marx and Engel lived, women were predominately seen as people who took care of the children and the home. They lived in a patriarchal society. From
the words they write in the Communist Manifesto, it becomes clear that family life is important. Marx & Engels (1998) comment that the entire family is torn apart by
big business. They reference the husband and wife paradigm here. They write: "...the more modem industry becomes developed, the more is the labour of men superseded by that
of women. Differences of age and sex have no longer any distinctive social validity for the working class. All are instruments of production" (Marx & Engels, 1998, p.59). Their words
ring true especially today. Unlike earlier in the century both men and women usually have to go out to work to make ends meet. This is something that Marx was
afraid of. Although there are some people who can afford to have their wives at home, many women both want careers and the money that goes with it. In todays
economic climate, it is unusual to see the stay at home mom model. People have different views on this situation, but Marx and Engels seemed to see it as detrimental.
