are paid more than women in many cases even when the job duties are identical! According to Diesing (2004), women are compensated an average of thirty percent less than men performing the same job. The situation becomes even more frustrating when we realize that there are significant differences in pay in jobs that are typically occupied by all females verses those that are occupied by all males. These differences can be up to fifty percent lower for all-female jobs than that for comparable all-male jobs (Cohen and Huffman 2003). Promotions are few for women and female input into management decisions almost non-existent. Even when women do promote to become managers they are commonly paid less than male managers doing the same job. The causative factors that have resulted in this situation are poorly understood. Opinions regarding the causes of pay discrepancy are frequently polarized. To illustrate this polarization it is helpful to address wage discrepancies from both a feminist perspective and a structural functionalist perspective. Admittedly, workplace management encompasses a myriad of considerations. One of the most prominent of these is determining fair compensation for ones employees. Most recognize that the world is a sometimes unfair place when it comes to equality between people. Although the term discrimination is most often associated with racial groups, there is often great workplace discrimination which is based on sex, age, or even on education. This is particularly true when it comes to employee compensation.
