about sixteen years old ("Some Facts," 1999). In 1993, close to 30 % (Chisholm, 1995, p.47) of married women--or women in common-law situations--had been assaulted by a mate. In
1997, there were 22,254 reports of spousal abuse and women made up 88% of the victims ("Some Facts," 1999). Women also comprised one third of homicide victims
in 555 cases in 1998 (1999). In researching data on solved cases, it seems that women were five times more likely to be "killed by a spouse than
by a stranger" (1999). The statistics show that in Canada, violence against women is quite prevalent. Unfortunately, the society does not seem to believe it. The explanation for domestic
violence is illusive because it is hard to explain the Jeckyl and Hyde mentality just as it is difficult to accept that good human beings can have such violent tendencies.
And while it is difficult to comprehend, psychologists and sociologists have attempted to explain a slew of untoward behavior. That said, an obvious cause of domestic violence should not be
overlooked. Although many do not like to use stereotypes as evidence, and certainly it is not evidence, it does help to provide a semblance of a reason why a man
might turn into a monster, and it just might be that domestic violence and substance abuse are related. It has been reported that 75% (Chartas & Culbreth, 2001,
p.2) of wives of alcoholics, who were surveyed, report being threatened with physical harm (AMA, 1992 as cited in Chartas & Culbreth, 2001, p.2). Also, other research reveals that as
many as 92% (2001, p.2) of arrested domestic violence assailants had either used drugs or alcohol on the day of the attack (Brookoff, OBrien, Cook, Thompson, & Williams, 1997 as
