in society in general. This paper considers two recent films with regard to how they portray violence and gender issues; and it also discusses television with regard to its presentation
of what is usually called "infotainment." Discussion At the movies: The two films that well consider are Enchanted and 300, because the first is a reworking of the Cinderella story,
a tale that is generally considered a "blueprint" for the passive female and a gendered story; and the second is interesting both as a study of violence and for the
equality of the male and female main characters. The New York Times review of Enchanted is by critic Manohla Dargis, who tells us in the first line that the
movie is not going to make its lead character into the "dont worry your pretty little head about it": "The movies like to promise girls and women a happily ever
after, but its unusual that one delivers an ending that makes you feel unsullied and uncompromised, that doesnt make you want to reach for your Simone de Beauvoir or a
Taser" (Dargis, 2007). She describes the film as an "unexpectedly delightful revisionist fairy tale from" that, although it doesnt "rewrite every bummer clich? about girls of all ages and their
dreams," still manages to send up, "at times with a wink, at times with a hard nudge, some of the very stereotypes that have long been this companys [Disney] profitable
stock in trade" (Dargis, 2007). Dargis calls it a "gently heretical redo, characterized by a script that falters only in the clinch, some agile if overly timid direction and a
