full of gender stereotypes and biases, and as children grow, they take on the roles that society expects them to play. Where do children learn gendered behavior? "These
attitudes and behaviors are generally learned first in the home and are then reinforced by the childs peers, school experience, and television viewing. However, the strongest influence on gender
development seems to occur within the family setting, with parents passing on, both overtly and covertly ... their own beliefs about gender" (Witt, 1997). The earliest experience children have with
what it means to be male or female comes from their parents. "From the time their children are babies, parents treat sons and daughters differently, dressing infants in gender
specific colors, giving gender differentiated toys, and expecting different behavior from boys and girls" (Witt, 1997). Children internalize these messages at a very early age, some as young as
two years of age (Witt, 1997). Even very young children use "gender stereotypes in negotiating their world"; at times, these stereotypes are so strong that children deny reality when
it doesnt meet their expectations of gender, such as a child whose mother is a physician saying that only men can be doctors (Witt, 1997). The fact that a
child could make this statement about his mother, who is both a doctor and female, shows clearly how strong gender bias is, and how early it forms. Bias is also
