the background - often overshadowed by their counterparts. However, their roles were hardly minimal - for as wives and mothers, they were nurturing the future warriors and mothers of
Greece. Three of the greatest Greek texts, Sophocles tragedy, Oedipus Rex, and Homers epic poems, "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" provide timeless mirrors into what society was like during
the times in which they were written. The portrayal of gender roles in these works offer considerable insight into what a patriarchal society expected of men and women -
and also occasionally dared to show how some characters chose to depart from them. In Oedipus Rex, gender roles as reflected in the primary male and female characters of King
Oedipus and Queen Jocasta are very much like that of a monarch and his subject. The concept of Greek society as representative of an extended family is very much
in evidence. When a deadly plague strikes Thebes with a violent intensity, no one took the suffering more to heart than Oedipus. He learned that his predecessor and
his wifes late husband, King Laius, had been murdered, Oedipus contends that it should be his foremost responsibility to bring the killer or killers to justice, believing this will save
his beloved city and people from total annihilation. Like an anguished father seeking to assist his ailing children, Oedipus pledges, "My children, I am filled with pity. I
