A 4 page research paper/essay that addresses the topic of gender roles in US culture. Gender roles in mainstream American culture have been evolving rapidly over the last thirty years due to the influence of the women's movement and its influence. Young women today have many more job opportunities and career options. Men who are openly emotional and who take a greater role in raising their children and domestic chores are no longer regarded as not being masculine. However, there have been some missteps along with the progress. This examination of contemporary gender roles will attempt to determine the nature of male and female roles in contemporary American society in order also to determine what this indicates about American cultural ideals. also to determine what this indicates about American cultural ideals. Feminist writer Rita Gross bemoans the current state of American role expectations because, while today women "can do anything
men can do," this has resulted in gaining "freedom from both the virtues and the defects of the female gender role," resulting in society becoming "ever more enamored of the
male gender role and a fairly unsatisfying version of that role" (Gross 8). What Gross means by this is that women today work as long and as hard as men
in the public sphere, participating in the "mad materialistic dash completely," which means that, in many situations, the more traditional female side of life, the nurturing of children and friendships
and family life, are sacrificed to the demands of a two-career marriage (Gross 8). In other words, Gross suggests that the role of women in contemporary society has expanded
beyond the domestic sphere into virtually every profession and job category from which they were once barred, they have had to conform their lifestyles and behaviors to the male role
model for those public roles. This view brings up the question of: To what extent have women learned to act in more aggressive, traditionally male ways? Gretchen Herrmann has researched
how people behave at yard sales--who negotiates and who accepts the price as posted by the seller. This body of research shows that, overwhelming, men are the most aggressive bargainers.
