distinguish men from women. Gender, by contrast, refers to the socially constructed behaviors, attributes, roles and activities that society expects from each sex. Traditional gender roles place the woman as
the homemaker and the man as the financial provider. It would be more accurate to define gender as having to do with masculinity and femininity. Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben (2009)
explain that the roles did not come about by accident. These historical roles are the result of the physical and biological differences between men and women. Men usually have more
physical strength than women and this strength was necessary in pre-industrial society when a great deal of strength was needed for most occupations (Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben, 2009). Women, by
contrast, become pregnant, have babies, and nurse the babies. Childcare was naturally placed on the shoulders of women (Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben, 2009). There have always been certain personality
characteristics associated with each role. Communal and expressive characteristics were associated with the role of homemaker while agentic or instrumental characteristics were viewed as being associated with economic or financial
providers (Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben, 2009). Historically, homemakers have been perceived as being nurturing, kind, considerate and helpful and economic providers have been perceived as being assertive, independent, and as
leaders (Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben, 2009). It does not matter if the opposite sex is performing the role, individuals who take on the domestic role are still viewed as having
communal traits and individuals who take on the provider role are seen as having agentic traits (Blakemore, Berenbaum and Liben, 2009). Nonetheless, public opinion usually believes that men and women
