life it is more hidden as it is more comfortable for society to believe that this is less of an issue in day to day living. In a recent small
article in the Financial Times there is an indication of this gender discrimination not only existing, but also being accepted as a societal norm. David Turner writes an article
with the title Sharp rise helps womens pay top Pounds 20,000. The style of the article is upbeat and reports that this is the first time ever that the average
wage of a full time female worker has risen above ?20,000 (Turner, 2003). This is placed in a political context when it is claimed that this news is likely to
be a relief to the government when prediction were that the pay gap between men and women would increase again. The increase may be assumed by a reader to be
partly due to the work of the Minister for Women who is also the Trade and Industry Secretary; Patricia Hewitt, undertaking work to increase opportunities for women (Turner, 2003). The
work has involved reducing some of the barriers faced by women in the work place with provision such as childcare and more flexible arrangements work time arrangements. The news
appears to be good, but in examining this article there is a telling piece of data missing, which is not included right until the end. There is reference to an
inequality of wages, but there is no attention paid to the disparity, only to push forward the point that women are gradually catching up with the men. The disparity is
