explicated, and can be explicated, in many different ways. It is the story of a woman perhaps abused psychologically by her father, a woman who was ostracized by her community,
a woman who is lonely, a woman who bears on her shoulders the Old South, and the story of a woman whose life was not very kind, to name but
a few of the ways in which the story can be examined. The following paper examines this story, and analyzes the story, from a gender perspective, illustrating the various ways
in which gender controls played a part in the story. Gender Controls in A Rose for Emily One of the most obvious ways in which gender is evident
is through the location and time period, or the setting, of this particular story. Emily was the victim of a society that was ultimately a patriarchal society wherein men ruled
everything. It was a time when women were expected to do nothing but be a wife and a mother and the men held the jobs and had the power. Emily
was severely controlled by her father, and never allowed a suitor or any freedom. Clearly this was Old South and patriarchy. This particular story, however, also has the elements of
the Old South and the New South which further complicates the matter. In the Old South, the South ruled and supported by slavery, the wealthy and powerful essentially controlled
everything and the lower society had to look up to them. This was the case with Emilys family for her father was considered incredibly important, and she simply the daughter
of that Old South master. But, the New South was emerging, a South that was not controlled by wealth and slavery, and Emily is apparently the last individual of that
