to life the differences between the way women and men relate to one another. Therefore, these stories are both insightful and introspective in regards to human nature and its
manifestations. Virginia Woolfs, To The Lighthouse, is an incredible look into the life of the Ramsay family while they are on
vacation in Scotland. In this story, gender conflict is not only evidenced between the characters themselves, but also through feminine and masculine universal forces. Mrs. Ramsay is very
"female", as evidenced by her love of poetry, her intuition, and her emotional nature. Mr. Ramsay is quite the opposite. He is a philosopher and as such, believes
in all things rational. He is the type to want to use reason as a means of understanding the world, whereas his wife prefers to respond to the world
from an emotional point-of-view. Interestingly, the character of Lily Briscoe is included as a means of tempering the other two more
extreme characters. In fact, the character of Lily borders on androgynous because she reveals such a blend of gender characteristics. She isnt extremely "female" in terms of not
being overly emotional, but even though she believes in reason is it not a guiding principle in her life. In this way, it is evident that she inhabits the
personality characteristics of both men and women. As the story unfolds, the reader clearly sees that despite the seemingly simple story,
