are cases of students with intelligence and ability who do poorly when in fact they should be performing at a higher level. The question then becomes, why do some students
not perform well when they clearly have the ability to do so. This paper tries to answer that question by posing a question based on recent observation of classes at
a community college. The observer noted that it seemed as though girls didnt participate in class as openly or with as much vigor and enjoyment as boys. They seemed shy
and reserved, unwilling to offer an opinion or join the discussion. Therefore, this paper considers the following questions: is there a gender-based difference in classroom participation, or was that observation
incorrect? Is there a cultural difference in classroom interaction (the students observed were largely Asian, and the author of this paper believes that the Asian cultures usually train women to
be subservient, so they have difficultly answer in class). This paper argues that more research is needed to determine if these two assumptions, about gender and culture, are correct. It
will try, within the limits imposed by its relatively short length, to answer those questions and perhaps to propose directions for further research. We begin with a brief literature review,
then follow that with a discussion of the consensus, if there is one, of what the literature says. Then follows a discussion of the results and a conclusion. Discussion Literature
review: The methodology used to find meaningful articles was as follows: research was done on the EBSCO Host databases, all of which were selected (even though obviously some do not
