distinctive systems but they are complementary. The first and perhaps most significant difference is that leaders have the vision for the organization. This is a long-term orientation. He or she
knows where they want the organization to be in several years. Managers, by contrast, are more concerned about short-term performance such as getting a project completed by a certain date.
Leaders are able to persuade others to adopt the vision and work towards reaching it. Managers coordinate the activities and resources to achieve the vision. A third difference is
that both leaders and managers must know the business very well but they know it in different ways. Leaders must be able to grasp the facts that are essential to
success as well as the underlying forces that have driven the business in the past and will drive it in the future (Future Visions, 2011). The leader must be able
to design or create a strategy that will help the organization achieve its goals. Managers do not need to know the past facts in order to be successful now and
in the future. A fourth difference is that effective leaders have charisma, they must have in order for people to willingly follow them. Charisma would help managers but it is
not a necessity (Future Visions, 2011). While it is too simplistic, one way of demonstrating the differences is that leadership is about effectiveness and management is about efficiency. If
all things are equal, the strongest leader will emerge from a mixed-gender group whether that is a woman or a man. Research, however, has indicated that a dominant male will
