communities are gravely impacted by the struggles inherent to such development. The most obvious and impacting anthropological aspect of Campbells (1995) account of the Wayapi is the manner by which
they have been - and continue to be - socially and economically distressed by the depletion of Amazonian rainforests. The extent to which these people heavily rely upon the
rainforests for their very survival is both grand and far-reaching; that they are steadily disappearing due to the much-heralded components of Western materialism and modernization speaks to an entire people
fighting against the odds to maintain their existence. Geertzs (1968) account speaks to the fact that such an explosive take-off of economic development - while typically beneficial to the nation
as a whole - often leaves behind those smaller societies who are wholly incapable of maintaining the speed with which such tremendous economic development is taking place. As a
direct result, the subordinate communities are forced to either sink or swim when it comes to the very basics of survival. II. CAMPBELL
