writer discusses the situation and how it has developed over the years since the end of WWI, so that in 1939, Europe is again facing war. Discussion The reporter is
in his or her 40s, which means that if they began their career at 20 or 21, which is not unusual, they would have started writing 20-25 years earlier, during
the "Great War." They would thus have seen and no doubt reported on that conflict, the post-war chaos in Europe, German inflation and Hitlers rise to power, and the persecution
of European Jews. This last is questionable: its possible that the fictional reporter never found anyone who admitted to knowing what was happening, or would talk about it. He was
also able to interview some of the key figures of the 1920s and 1930s. Because Germany is the aggressor at this point, its logical that he (the reporter could
be either male or female; the he/she construction is just awkward so well use "he") would start the piece with a portrait of Germany and why it has chosen to
risk the peace once again. The reporter has tried to interview Hitler but got nowhere; he is very closely guarded and impossible to see. But the reporter was in Germany
at the end of WWI and found the social and economic conditions there to be deplorable. The country was in ruins, a entire generation of young men was dead-which was
true of all the combatants except the United States-and still the victorious allies had insisted on harsh reparations. Not only did the Treaty of Versailles demand reparations that Germany couldnt
