of homosexuals serving in the military, however, has been particularly laced with controversy. In recent years a compromise of sorts has been reached. That compromise is the so-called
"dont ask, dont tell" policy. Homosexuals have been serving in the military, of course, for centuries. This service has been quite valiant in many cases. Still, the
open acknowledgement of homosexuality in an organization with the structure of the US military, presents numerous problems. These problems are both ideological and logistical and are, in fact, something
that must be considered if optimal military function is to be achieved. For the present, the "dont ask, dont tell" policy is still
in effect in the US military. That, however, is subject to change with the influence of our incoming US President, Baraq Hussein Obama. During his campaign Obama pledged
to "work for a consensus repealing the law that bans open homosexuals in the ranks (Bedard, 2008). He made this pledge in full recognition of the fact that many
present and past military leaders still hold to their guns with the contention that integrating homosexuals into the military will work only if the "dont ask, dont tell" policy is
maintained. Retired Air Force Gen. Merrill McPeak, for example, actually supported Obama during his campaign and that support was critical in giving Obama the credibility he needed in terms
of national security (Bedard, 2008). McPeak, however, insists that gays can only serve effectively in the military if they keep their sexuality private (Bedard, 2008).
