any ethnic minority revolves around the fact that homosexuality is an orientation not a preference (Anonymous, 2005), effectively clearing up one of the most significant misconceptions associated with a gay
or lesbian lifestyle. Sexual orientation is no longer a private matter. Instead, contemporary society has taken it upon itself to scrutinize, judge and condemn the most private part of
an individuals existence and deem him or her unworthy of acceptance under traditional social dictates (Bowles, 1998). The overwhelming intolerance inherently associated with homosexuality is akin to the overwhelming
cultural intolerance experienced for centuries; just because they may be of an Asian persuasion does not inherently equate to other Asians accepting them based solely upon their shared ethnicity.
While religion does not play an integral role in the way in which, for example, Latinos perceive gays and lesbians within their own ethnic
group, one might readily surmise how the lack of religious tolerance is partly to blame for how the Latino community responds to its subpopulation. Religion, for the most part,
teaches one to love unconditionally, even if the individual in question does not necessarily meet what one might consider to be certain social standards (Gomez, 1994).
