any awareness of the vicious nature of modern people in terms of their willingness to hate. In addition, such hate that is predicated on the basis of what most
people believe is truly none of anybody elses business or concern -- their sexuality -- seems particularly absurd and socially destructive. Nonetheless, the fact remains that the outrage, hatred,
and condemnation generated by peoples hostility toward homosexuality in a large number of the social realms of modern America are very real, very evident, and very much a part of
everybodys concern. It is one of the most insidious of hatreds with some of the most frightening and devastating outcomes. One need think only of the pitiful and
horrific story of Matthew Shepard dying on a rangeland fence in Wyoming to realize that. Such travesty must be addressed and dissolved. The entire world has been given a
"new chance" through the promise of a new millennium, to expand human consciousness to a point of understanding and compassion for all people. The destructive and violent energies of
the past in so many areas -- international disputes, religion, environmental degradation, poverty, neglect and abuse of children -- can be turned to a positive force for change. Humanity
cannot use the 21st century to repeat the horrors of the 20th century that have included world war, genocide, holocaust, nuclear disaster, and the ability to manipulate the genetic reality
of animals and humans. Perhaps the specter of a "new world order" can be redesigned to the prevalence of a "new world compassion." A Goal of Security and Peace The
