that it was unconstitutional for civil law to restrict marriage as being applicable only to a man and a woman (Kelly). A marriage license was subsequently granted on November 16,
2009, but the couple immediately came under attack from church leaders, who warned the legitimization of a gay marriage would mean the "swift decline of the continents traditional family values"
(Kelly). There are no countries in Latin America that officially allow gay marriage, but there are several cities in both Mexico and Uruguay that have followed the example of
Buenos Aires by allowing same-sex civil unions (Kelly). Freyre and Di Bello, however, rejected getting a civil union as an option, as the couple feels that "only marriage would give
them the same legal rights and status in the eyes of the law" (Kelly). Initially, the couple set their wedding date as December 1, but it had to be postponed
due to a last-minute legal challenge and was eventually accomplished on December 28 in Tierra del Fuego (Allen). John L. Allen argues that the significance of the December 28 same-sex
wedding is what this event implies about secularization, as a deep fear of the Catholic Church has been that secular attitudes will "radiate out from the West and infect the
rest the world," and, certainly, this "legally sanctioned gay marriage in Latin America" can be taken as substantiation of this concern (Allen). Furthermore, this is not the only development
in regards to gay marriage in Latin America that has caused religious conservatives concern, as there was also gay marriage was also legalized in December of 2009 in Mexico City
