Roger Ebert notes, concerning this film, "At a time when we read about cloned sheep and tomatoes crossed with fish, the science in Gattaca is theoretically possible" (Ebert). It is
a film that is far in the future and thus one would expect to see different social patterns, especially in relationship to gender roles. The following paper examines the film
as it pertains to gender roles. Gattaca and Gender Roles In watching this film one of the most obvious gender elements concerns the basic love story. The woman
in the film is not incredibly independent or seemingly different than any woman today. She is rather docile and even when she is faced with the identity of her lover
she is only slightly irate, eventually coming back to him because he is not perfect. But, taking away the entire futuristic element of the film the love story is very
modern, and perhaps even timeless for the man is the one who drives the action and the relationship. Aside from the romance in the film the most obvious gender
role elements can be seen towards the beginning of the film as they are setting the stage for the story. For example, as the film opens, over the intercom of
the office building is a womans voice. It is a soothing voice and one could well argue that a womans voice will make people more sedate and relaxed, calming the
employees. A mans voice would not do the same. And, although a futuristic film, it is something that most advertisers do today in relationship to calming people and ultimately controlling
people. A mans voice is used to energize people, such as the mans voice in many game shows. A womans voice is not energizing, it is docile and this film
