absence he can recapture his youth and the love of his youth; Daisy. While this is perhaps a common sort of fantasy that people possess, in the case of Jay it is something of an unrealistic and thus pure fantasy of a dream. Gatsby has returned, after making a fortune, and essentially moved beyond any sense of social morality or understanding of time and reality in his fantasy hope and dream of recapturing the love of his youth. The following paper examines this perspective. Gatsbys Fantasy Jay is something of an allusive character in the novel, at least for a large portion of the story. And, to complicate his character even more there are many rumors about him in the community that is consumed with gossiping, drinking, and partying. He is supposedly a man who earned his mass fortune through illegal means, and people talk about him as it relates to him being something of a killer. But, his character is so kind and seemingly simple, if not oblivious, that it does not seem to matter what he did in his past for people genuinely like him. AS the narrator notes, in relationship to Jays smile, "It understood you just so far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey" (Fitzgerald 32). This clearly denotes a man who is kind, and perhaps a man who lives in a fantasy world, one that belies the negative truths he has seen. However, this is not something that is evident at this time in the story because the reader has really only just met Jay and thus truly knows nothing of his past. ...
