leading to the collapse of civilization. We are also overly dependent on foreign oil, and that is a problem that demands a solution. This paper suggests that gas rationing may
be a way to solve these crises, and speculates on what the effect of such rationing would be on the U.S. economy. Discussion Its proven difficult to find solid sources
on this subject; that is, there are no articles that say "Rationing Gas Would Cause U.S. to Collapse" or "Gas Rationing Means End of Republican Party." Instead, we can put
together current information with reaction to gas rationing in the past to speculate on what would happen if Congress began to issue vouchers for gasoline. In the first place, its
difficult to see how Congress could pass any sort of rationing law that is even marginally fair: should people who drive enormous Hummers that waste gas get vouchers that will
allow them to keep driving these beasts? Or is there going to be a different system, based perhaps on miles driven per week regardless of the vehicle? That is, everyone
who drives 200 miles to work gets X gallons of gas, and if its not enough, too bad. Or would Congress instead work out a system so that those who
drive farther get more gas? Whos going to go around to all the congressional districts and check on the drivers habits? And what about the people who dont drive at
all? They will gain nothing from this measure. It could be argued that since the people without cars are likely to be poor, they could sell their gas cards to
drivers and make some money, but they would somehow have to qualify in the first place. A Congressional law issuing vouchers seems to have "nightmare" written all over it.
