to the realities of the modern world. First of all, however, in order to argue that an individual is successfully reflecting Judeo-Christian tradition and Christian teaching, it is first
necessary to define what is meant by those terms. For example, many Americans equate Judeo-Christian tradition with the political ideals espoused by the nations Founding Fathers; yet, two prominent Marxists,
Eugene Debs and Norman Thomas, also base their political beliefs on Christian grounds. Debs presents Jesus as "a pure communist who sought to destroy class rule and set up the
common people as the sole and rightful inheritors of the earth" (Kazin, 1998, p. 16). Thomas was a former Presbyterian minister who was imprisoned for speaking out against World
War I (Kazin, 1998, p. 16). As this suggests, pinning down the cultural meaning of Judeo-Christian tradition and scriptural teaching is often a tricky proposition and derives not only from
history, but also from personal perspective. This is a fact that Higgins has addressed in his research on religious beliefs in Northern Ireland, where he points out that the anti-Catholic
