The following paper offers a report on the book, published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers in 2005. Gangs of America The work of Nace is incredibly extensive and cannot be summed up in this short space. It is a work that takes the reader into the world of what is often seen as the first corporation, the Virginia Company, as well as the Royal African Company. There was also the East India Company. These companies were created in order to reap the rewards of whatever the new land had to offer, regardless of any consequences. It truly is a chapter that illustrates how the United States, before it was the United States, was perhaps founded on corporations and corporate ideals. For example, the author notes how, "the East India Company planned to replace independent local merchants with a company-owned distribution system" which clearly indicates a very early sort of corporate thinking (Nace, 2005; 43). The book goes into other companies through history such as the railroad and U.S. Steel. It is a work that examines how the corporations, at some times, created wealth for some but then also clearly created a situation wherein wealth was not even distributed by any stretch of the imagination.
