problems and gang participation present considerable problems for educators and parents, who struggle with the displays of physical aggression and with gang participation in adolescent populations. In considering the
nature of aggression, then, it is beneficial to relate some of the main theories or theoretical views of aggression and define variations in perceptions of aggression related to factors like
gender and home environment. Aggression can be defined as any act of physical or verbal force that is not in alignment with appropriate behaviors or expectations of force.
Physical aggression generally includes things like hitting, kicking, throwing objects and can be combined with verbal aggression in certain situations. Physical aggression is commonly exhibited by most children during
their preschool years, and has been noted as a significant behavioral component for children with "developmental disabilities and emotional disturbances" (Hunt et al, 1990). It has also been recognized
that aggression becomes increasingly common in populations of children with behavioral or developmental disabilities, where behaviors of this kind are often learned or maintained by reinforcement (Hunt et al 1990:
111). Social conditions become problematic through systems of communication (Charon). This interactionist perspective is based on the idea that specific conditions and communications support the continuation of social
