Gandhis assassination on January 3, 1948 by a young Hindu fanatic who was opposed to Gandhis support of one India for both Hindus and Moslems. (Anonymous, 2002). From the opening
scenes of the assassination, Attenborough cuts to South Africa in 1893. This shows Gandhi, at the age of twenty-four, impeccably dressed in an English business suit, traveling by train
toward Natal. Gandhi spent three years studying law in London and then, failing to establish a successful law practice in India, he traveled to South Africa to become South Africas
first and only Indian attorney (Anonymous, 2002). While on the train, a South African white man enters Gandhis first-class compartment and has the "colored" man thrown from the train. This
act awakened in Gandhi a realization of racial inequality that characterized South Africa. Soon, Gandhi is living like the other Indian "coolies," with his wife and sons in an
