been one of the greatest leaders in history. He was a man who came from a relatively simple, yet powerful family in relationship to a history in politics, and a
man who took it upon himself to risk his life as a leader for change. The following paper examines Gandhi in reference to his outstanding leadership. Gandhi First
off it appears as though Gandhi received a very well rounded education, while possessing a very open mind, about many things. It is important that a good leader possess an
open mind and essentially learn many things about various people. For example, he began as a scholar and then moved into the profession of lawyer in London, wherein he experienced
a "period...of avoiding temptation, and of learning new ideas" (Yates, 2009). He then later moved to Africa where he worked for more than two decades "working as advisor to a
well-to-do member of the Muslim Indian community" (Yates, 2009). He also worked and learned in other endeavors as well: "Whilst in South Africa he learnt from Jewish and Christian friends,
and developed respect for the ideas of Leo Tolstoy amongst others. Tolstoys work "The Kingdom of God is within You" stated that all Government is based on war, and that
one can only counter these evils through passive resistance. Gandhi also got involved in humanitarian activities. For example, he led a Red Cross unit in the Boer War, in 1899,
and was decorated by the British authorities as a result" (Yates, 2009). In these endeavors he learned a great deal about other
