century classic analysis of the influence of politics in war. Galula explains the relationship between the cause, that is, the motivation for war, and the likelihood for success that a
insurgency movement may anticipate and how this cause is frequently political in nature. Likewise, Von Clausewitz argues that the political object that provides the motivation in war is of crucial
importance because it provides the motivation that compels the action associated with warfare. Galula explains that an insurgents cause should be one that attracts the greatest number of supporters,
while also generating the least possible level of opposition. The insurgents cause must also be specific enough that the enemy cannot also voice support for it. For example, when the
Philippine government offered land to an indigenous tribe fighting for land reform, it eradicated the need for the insurgents cause (Galula 13). Galula indicates that any political problem
can be exploited by an insurgency if it meets the criteria cited above (Galula 14). These problems maybe economic or social in nature, but they all have political implications. Mao
Tse-tung defined a political problem as "an unsolved contradiction" and when a faction champions "one side of the contradiction" over another, the grounds for insurgency emerges (Galula 14). The problems
may be social or economic, but the basic formula for revolutionary action remains the same. Von Clausewitz, in his nineteenth century classic On War, essentially indicated the same position,
as he indicates that the "political object" provides the "original motive" for war (Von Clausewitz chap. 1). He then goes on to envision the nature of this political object as
