of a news story. The nine values are timespan, scale (intensity, numbers), clarity/lack of ambiguity, cultural meaningfulness or relevance, consonance, unexpectedness, continuity, composition, and elite nations/persons (personification). These nine would
have other relationships as well, particularly a relationship to the sociocultural values of the society receiving the news, or gatekeepers. Used in news reporting, a combination of these values can
produce the desired image of a place, people and events. However, the authors warned, by selecting this order, the reported event could differ from "reality." Despite the warning, Galtung and
Ruges values have become a standard in journalism. These values can be related to any concept, from train derailments to adoption. Likewise, certain
of the values could be intrinsic to a scientific event. Take SARS for example. This was a totally unexpected news report when it
first came out. Everyone was just getting comfortable that they had survived AIDS, e coli and Hantavirus, then the SARS story hit. Even with
such a strong background in infectious disease scares, SARS spread so quickly and so easily that thousands of the viewing public cancelled business trips. The surprise of the disease, along
with the number of deaths (scale) of the SARS scare made for good reporting. But within days of the first reports, additional values had
to be added to the story to create a fresh story. Anything less would have been tuned out, and eventually was when relevancy was alleviated.
