He is also well known in his country for being politically involved. The following paper offers research regarding Marquez involvement in politics while also discussing the criminal Pablo Escobar. Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Pablo Escobar "Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel Prize laureate, socialist, storyteller, representative of the lyrical Colombian soul. A man who has stood steadfast by his beliefs and has lived most of his life exiled from the country of his birth and which he poetically describes in his books" (Paez). While his work is poetic, it is also work that is seen as very controversial in relationship to his homeland of Colombia. In short, he has always been involved in, at the very least, reacting to the history he sees unfold. He is not simply an author who comments on the realities and the struggles he sees, but a man who also sets out to find balance as he approaches, and knows, many well known political figures such as Castro. On the other side of this rich and poetic Colombia resides the historical figure that was Pablo Escobar Gaviria: "narcotics kingpin, terrorist, killer, Boss, Godfather, representative of the violence that is so much a part of the history of Colombia and the character of its people" (Paez).
