falls to earth and is taken in by people, an ignorant people, only to be used and discarded, revealing many realities in its content (Simon). In the following paper we
present an explication of "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings," arguing that the old man threatens the dull, lifeless, ignorant existence of these people. A Very Old
Man With Enormous Wings It should be understood that in this particular story, as with perhaps many other stories, the plot elements are intricately linked with overall theme and symbolism
as well. Bearing that in mind we present the simplest of plot element found in "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings." First of all, the angel was primarily sent
to retrieve the soul of a dying child. Because of his age, and the power of the humans to somehow take charge, he eventually leaves without achieving this task. In
addition to this plot element we also have the plot regarding the humans desire to make the old man something of a side show exhibit, looking to make money, only
to lose interest in the angel. This simple synopsis offers us an incredible array of possibilities for explicating. It is a clearly a story of ignorance and a story
of religious and spiritual implications. It is a story that offers us the dismal world of a people who would prefer not to find any hope or any spiritual realities
in their world. And, if they do want spiritual realities they certainly do not want them in the form of this man. In the opening scene we find a
