Germs and Steel, examines how this happened, and what factors allowed for one segment of the worlds population to so dominate and influence the others. Diamonds theory of differential development
would seem to give as good an explanation as any. Differential development is really just a trumped up phrase to describe the economic advantage that one group may or may
not have over another. Writing this book with an environmentalists slant is exceptionally illuminating because in the strictest biological sense it provides a logical argument (for the most part) for
the domination of the world by European conquest. This domination all stems, he contends, from that populations ability to adapt and control their environment(Diamond 1997). In the case of
the Europeans, he states, that because the early descendents of Europe were able to cultivate seeds they were therefore able to feed more people. But, what makes this culture different
than others who were also agrarian by nature, was that the particular seeds, and plants, which grew in this climate at this time were large and easy to grow in
large numbers. More food equals more people. Additionally, he states, Eurasia had the one-two punch which allowed Europeans advantage: large animals. Because there were more large animals available for domestication
and for use as a ready food source, the Eurasians were able to far surpass other cultures in their development. This shift from hunting-gathering groups toward farming did not happen
overnight, Diamond offers. Rather, he believes it was the combination of careful observation of certain plants growth patterns. An affinity, for example, for a certain type of plant caused the
group to camp nearest to those plants. At some point the group began to tend the plant and care for it in order to encourage it to produce more fruit.
