discuss the organizational culture of those teachers who rely on groupthink to teach their curricula. We were, unfortunately, unable to find the actual case study referred to. There is, however, a great deal of literature on groupthink in general and some scholarly literature on groupthink in the academic environment specifically. Well use those resources to construct this paper. First, its important to understand what the definition of groupthink is. Coined by psychologist Irvin Janis in the early 1970s, "groupthink" is what he considered "a process by which a group can make bad or irrational decisions" (Wikipedia, 2005). The reason why this happens is because members of the group in a groupthink situation attempt to conform their opinions to what they believe the consensus of the group is (Wikipedia, 2005). The problem is, this means that the group, in consensus, might end up agreeing on a decision or action that ends up being risky or unwise, simply because the entire group believes that this is what the group wants (Wikipedia, 2005). Janis belief was that individuality tends to get lost under the groups demands for conformity (Wikipedia, 2005). But what about the classroom? The classroom, which is supposed to teach students how to think and be creative on their own? Johnson and Weaver (1992) point out that the goal of many teachers tends to be a "high level of cohesiveness" among students (Johnson and Weaver, 1992, 102). In some ways, the author points out, this isnt necessarily bad -- cohesion, after all, pulls a group together, and helps then function as a team (Johnson and Weaver, 1992).
