However, as businesses began operating on a more national and international basis, it was found that the manager-run, department/division model of a corporation was a little too cumbersome.
It took too long to get things decided and approved with this model, meaning corporations lost much of their competitive advantages. This is when the concept of work teams, or
"teaming" took place. The proponents of work teams are very passionate about how great these teams are. They explain that pulling together
like-minded individuals with a strong leader helps an organization with innovation and flexibility. These proponents point out a vision of kind of a corporate utopia; a company that has a
huge competitive advantage because it can get things done a lot more quickly, thanks to teams. The problem is, the business literature
is also filled with cases of teams and teamwork that failed because of the team members involved and the corporate structure in which these teams operated. The concept of team-driven
processes was a great dream, but many companies realized that implementation of these concepts was fast becoming a nightmare. In this paper,
