and how such spaces can actually add benefit to a community. But in what way does this happen? And in what way are green spaces actually beneficial to South Carolina?
Are they really worth the cost of implementation? For one thing, the addition of green spaces can help drastically reduce the impact
of urban sprawl, which is a definite problem in South Carolina (Fretwell, 2000). Because of "development," scientists have discovered pollution in Columbia lakes, huge bacteria levels in coastal rivers and
even smoggy air across western South Carolina (Fretwell, 2000). Urban sprawl is created when too much progress, in the form of chain restaurants, retail outlets and new homes, tend to
build up, almost overnight (Fretwell, 2000). In addition to the horrible air pollution, the noise pollution of urban sprawl tends to bring on headaches as well. And the problem with
much of this sprawl, is that its developed without much in the way of parks or forests in mind. Furthermore, were also
living in an era in which pollution isnt necessarily being eradicated, but one in which companies can actually buy and sell rights to emit pollutants into the air (Doherty, 1996).
This is one good advantage of green space, however - namely that trees are known (and have always been known) to be great absorbers of carbon dioxide. The more trees
there are, the less carbon dioxide to worry about. Perhaps the most compelling argument for green space comes from the Land of
1000 Lakes - Minnesota. In October 2003, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued its report, "Brownfields to Green Space Cleanup," which presented some solid arguments about the importance of green
