from the restoration of democracy. Though Ancient Greece had been famed for creating the concept of democracy, the country had been ruled by a military regime between 1967 and its
collapse in 1974 (Lyrintzis and Nikolakopoulos, 2006). It seemed fitting, therefore, that elections at the beginning of the millennium were hotly contested between the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), one of
the first parties to emerge in Greeces "new democracy" of the 1970s and the New Democracy party, a right wing party that was also formed in 1974 (Lyrintzis and
Nikolakopoulos, 2006). In 2000, PASOK ended up with the controlling majority, but a very narrow one, with PASOK coming away with 158 seats in parliament to NDs 125. (Lyrintzis and
Nikolakopoulos, 2006). The tables were turned in 2004, when the ND, as it is dubbed, came up with a decisive victory, controlling 165 seats of parliament versus the PASOKs 117
(Lyrintzis and Nikolakopoulos, 2006). Whats interesting to observe is that PASOK didnt really do anything wrong - in fact, it was
a party that had done a lot right. Beginning in 1996, the party had brought Greece into the EU, and also gave it an air of respect abroad. But ultimately,
the 2000 election saw the diminishing of PASOKs power, while the 2004 election put the final nail of that power in the coffin. OVERVIEW
